I was also among those laid off at Argus in mid-March when we closed.
For me the decision was deciding between looking for work and going
back to school for my masters (most Argus consultants had an MLIS).
A second factor was staying in the US or returning to Canada. Visa
issues were a factor.
I decided to go back to school and chose a Canadian university,
despite having several strong job leads. I wanted to do my masters,
but I also felt nervous about accepting another job. Things looked
too shaky for me to put much trust in a new employer.
Last spring I moved 1700km's on 5 weeks notice to take a job in
Vancouver. I hated it. Six months later I quit and moved to Ann
Arbor to join Argus. I loved it, but the downturn was just starting
to hit us and Argus closed five months after I joined. A month after
being laid off I had packed my bags and moved back to Canada to
start school.
A major attraction of going back to school was that I knew for a
fact that I would living in one place doing one thing for at least
the next year!
